UNION TERRITORIES

1.    ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLAND
a.     Andaman: Italian traveler Niccolo de Conti mentioned the word Andaman meant "Island of Gold". A theory that became prevalent in the late 19th century and has since gained momentum is that the name of the islands derives from Sanskrit via the Malay Handuman, named for the deity Hanuman.
b.    Nicobar: The name "Nicobar" is probably derived from theChola Dynasty name for the islands,Nakkavaram.

2.    CHANDIGHAR

 "Chandi's fort". No actual fort ever existed; a large Chandi temple "protected" the                locals, hence the name. The goddess Chandi appears as a form of the goddess Kali or Parvati

3.    DELHI

            The etymology of "Delhi" is uncertain. This Delhi was earlier known as INDRAPRAST
4.    LAKSHADWEEP
        
         "Hundred Thousand Islands". Laksha means hundreds and thousand, and dweep means                                        island
5.    PUDUCHEERY

            formerly known as Pondicherry: from Puducheri, Pundu means new, cheri means camp.
6.    DADRA AND NAGAR HAVELI

            From the towns of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
7.    DAMAN AND DIU

            From the towns of Daman and Diu.
Arunachal Pradesh (Land of the dawn-lit mountains)
In Sanskrit, aruna means "dawn-lit" and achal "mountains".
